As an AmeriCorps member working with Children’s Health Alliance of Wisconsin (the Alliance) and the Love My Air Wisconsin (LMA WI) program, I had the incredible opportunity to attend an event at Lowell Elementary School alongside environmental health Program Manager, Sarah Kroening, MSpEd, and Milwaukee Public Schools Student Wellness and Prevention Curriculum Specialist, Carlos Rodriguez. This event was a celebration of Lowell International Elementary School’s exceptional efforts in promoting air quality awareness and health among its students and within the community.

Air Pup visits Lowell International Elementary School
The day was filled with excitement and anticipation as Sarah and I arrived at the school. We were greeted by enthusiastic students and staff who were eager to learn more about the importance of outdoor air quality. Sarah spoke about the impact of air quality on children’s health and educational outcomes, emphasizing the importance of monitoring outdoor air quality – particularly for children with asthma and other respiratory conditions.

The highlight of the event was introducing Air Pup, the Alliance’s air quality mascot who educates the community on local air quality changes and updates with his bandana!

Interactive learning and engagement
Throughout the event, I had the pleasure of capturing the interactions and excitement on camera. Students gathered around to see Air Pup. It was heartwarming to see their genuine enthusiasm and engagement. Click here to see exciting moments from our visit!

Sarah’s presentation was complemented by a range of interactive tools and resources provided by the LMA WI program, which allowed students and staff to understand the immediate impact of air pollution and take proactive measures when necessary.

A community united for healthier air
Lowell International Elementary School’s use of the EPA Flag program was a great example of the school, parents and community members collectively prioritizing children’s health. It was clear that air quality resources and specialized support were making a tangible difference in their lives.

Looking ahead
As we wrapped up the event, I felt a deep sense of pride and fulfillment in being part of such a meaningful initiative. The LMA WI program is not only enhancing air quality awareness, but also fostering a sense of hope and empowerment among children, families and educators.

This school visit is just one of many steps we are taking toward creating healthier environments for Wisconsin’s children. I am excited to continue working with Sarah and the rest of the team to expand the reach and impact of LMA WI, and I look forward to many more opportunities to celebrate and support our communities in their journey toward cleaner air and healthier futures.

Thank you, Lowell International Elementary School, for your inspiring efforts, and for showing us all the power of community and education in making a difference!
