Our Healthy Smiles for Mom and Baby (HSMB) project wrapped up July 31. Funded in part by the Health Resources and Services Administration, HSMB focused on increasing dental utilization for pregnant women and young children by integrating oral health in the health care delivery system.
Six implementation sites ran quality improvement projects to increase preventive dental services and referrals to dental providers within Women Infants and Children (WIC) or Prenatal Care Coordination (PNCC) programs. The HSMB Implementation Guide provides an overview of project outcomes and models that emerged.
Additional HSMB resources are available, including the Oral Health Online Training, which helps non-medical, non-dental providers incorporate oral health messages into conversations with families. Oral health goal-setting magnets, education flip charts and toothbrushes are available for those who complete the training.
